It was established in 1975 and later formally recognised through an act of the National Assembly in 1981. The hospital serves as a teaching hospital for the University of Jos, particularly for the College of Health Sciences. JUTH was founded to serve three primary purposes: patient care, medical education, and research. It provides clinical training for medical students, nurses, laboratory scientists, and other allied health professionals. The hospital offers practical learning opportunities that complement classroom teaching, giving students hands-on experience with real patients under supervision. Beyond training, JUTH is a referral centre for complex medical cases from within Plateau State and neighbouring regions. It provides a wide range of specialised services including surgery, internal medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, emergency medicine, nephrology, oncology, and more. It also runs programmes like dialysis and fertility treatment. JUTH also contributes to medical research and innovation. It partners with various national and international health institutions to carry out studies, particularly in areas like infectious diseases, maternal and child health, and public health. Through its roles in service delivery, education, and research, JUTH continues to play a significant role in the Nigerian healthcare system.

I told him i have a place to be and I’m heading there, next week Wednesday, I called him in the morning telling him I’ll be coming by 4:30pm he asked if I was the one who came last week, I said yes and he arrogantly said I should go to hospital to get a refund, he won’t be meeting with me, I think you should have a urologist who is reasonable and responsible, not your current urologist!!

Va_leena F. ★★★★★ : If I could give zero stars I would have, the service is deplorable. The one star is for the nurses that actually do their job. My family’s experience at this hospital during my mother’s surgery has been extremely disappointing and concerning. First, no one asked for my mother’s medical history before giving us the list of medications to purchase. My mother has ulcers, yet one of the drugs we were asked to buy was a medication that is not suitable for ulcer patients. When we pointed this out and returned it to the pharmacy, instead of a refund they simply replaced it with another tablet with the same properties. There were also serious issues after surgery. My mother came out of surgery without a catheter even though she had been placed under full anesthesia and could not move her body. We were then asked to pay separately for the catheter even though it should have been part of the surgical care, and staff delayed for a long time before attending to it. At one point a nurse even suggested putting her on a potty despite the fact that she was unable to move. Another troubling incident involved a senior nurse/matron entering my mother’s ward, opening her cabinet, and taking medication that we had already paid for without explanation. When my mother asked if she was administering an injection, she said she was “borrowing” the medication. Basic professionalism also seemed lacking. Staff frequently ask patients’ families to supply items like pens during rounds, medications are handled carelessly, and at one point a nurse scattered my mother’s drugs while checking them and left used syringes and empty vials among the medicines. Families are also often expected to perform basic patient care tasks. For a hospital—especially one handling surgical patients—this level of organization, hygiene, and communication is unacceptable. Hospitals should prioritize patient safety, proper medical procedures, and professional conduct. I hope management takes these concerns seriously and improves the standard of care.
