• kakam N. ★★★★★ : Shoprite Enugu is a supermarket outlet, which served as a major anchor/tenant at the Palms Polo Park Mall on Abakaliki Road (Old GRA), Enugu North Local Government Area. The outlet formally shut its doors following progressive nationwide retail closures. The closure followed years of operational changes after South Africa's Shoprite Holdings sold its Nigerian business to Persianas Investment Limited. Subsequently, the retail giant progressively closed its regional stores due to supply issues, mismanagement & economic pressures. Presently, the massive retail space inside the mall sits vacant, drastically reducing customer foot traffic within the Polo Park premises. Correspondingly, other peripheral mall businesses, banking spots, & local vendors have experienced a sharp drop in daily patrons since the supermarket closed down. Since Shoprite is no longer operational, most of the potential customers have migrated to other supermarkets in the city. Roban Stores, located along Roban Stores Road (Independence Layout) & Agbani Road, SPAR Nigeria, & Market Square are now beneficiaries of Shoprite's misfortune. Hitherto, Polo Park Mall (also known as The Palms Polo Park) was the premier shopping, retail & entertainment destination in Enugu State, Nigeria. Opened in September 2011 by the Persianas Group in partnership with the Enugu State Government, it served as a central social & commercial hub for residents & visitors in Enugu. It hosted the multi-screen Genesis Cinema for the latest movie releases, alongside electronic & virtual reality gaming centers. There were amusement roller-coaster rides too on the giant ferris wheel, carousels, & a children's playground. Furthermore, it hosted over 80 local & international brand outlets spanning fashion, electronics, & cosmetics. Also, food courts featuring popular fast-food chains like KFC & Cold Stone creamery were domiciled here. Other facilities offered include a massive, secure, inexhaustible parking lot with capacity for up to 1,400 cars with full wheelchair accessibility. Undoubtedly, the mall historically relied on Shoprite as its main anchor tenant, but recent commercial developments mean that other popular brands with outlets here (such as Puma & Levi's), telecom outlets, & banking services etc, must step in & hold forte in the facility. In all, the collapse of Shoprite is not only sad, but an incalculable disaster. Shoprite Mall & the Polo Park Enugu in it's entirety is a magnificent edifice with deep historical ties to the city. One can only hope & pray that they overcome the present adversity, dust themselves up, reorganise & come back to their feet, even if it's in a new brand name & modus operandi. Good luck !
