Chidiebere U. ★★★★★ : My experience at Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba during my father’s admission left me with serious concerns about the standard of care and overall system efficiency. As someone with a background in Anatomy, I fully appreciate that doctors undergoing housemanship must learn through clinical exposure. However, what I observed went far beyond structured learning, it felt uncoordinated, almost like a trial-and-error approach to patient management. Clinical decisions lacked consistency, and there appeared to be minimal senior oversight in critical moments. One of the most troubling issues was the limited involvement of consultants. In our case, the consultant reviewed patients only once a week. This significantly delayed decision making and, by extension, patient outcomes. In acute settings, especially where timely intervention is crucial, such infrequency can have serious consequences. There also seems to be an unspoken system where having personal connections accelerates care. Without this, processes that should take hours can stretch into days, leaving patients in prolonged discomfort or risk. Healthcare delivery should be equitable and not dependent on who you know. Another major concern was the handling of laboratory investigations. Despite full payment for tests, relatives were responsible for transporting samples to the lab. This not only places undue burden on families but also introduces risks to sample integrity and delays in diagnosis—both of which can compromise patient care. The attitude within the Accident & Emergency unit was particularly alarming. Emergencies require urgency, coordination, and empathy, yet what I observed suggested a lack of all three. The apparent indifference in such a critical department raises serious questions about patient safety and institutional accountability. That said, I believe the hospital has the potential to improve. The gaps I observed seem less about lack of knowledge and more about insufficient supervision, weak operational structure, and absence of strict accountability systems. With stronger oversight, better consultant engagement, and improved workflow processes, this institution could deliver the standard of care it is capable of.
