AI O.★★★★★ — Dear Management,
I am writing to formally complain about the care my friend, P.A., received at your eye clinic at June Clinic on Monday 2nd Feb, 2026. I am acting as his advocate with his full consent.
PA attended your clinic with a visual disturbance. He was examined and a diagnosis was made; however, no explanation was provided to him regarding the diagnosis, its significance, or the proposed management plan. I had to explain this to him myself afterwards. This falls below acceptable standards of clinical practice. Patients are entitled to understand their condition and the rationale for treatment following a paid consultation.
Following the consultation, a prescription was issued in which the medications were anonymised, with only costs attached. The names of the drugs and their purpose were deliberately withheld, and no explanation of their effects or potential side-effects was given. This is deeply concerning. It is impossible for a patient to check for allergies, interactions, or contraindications if the names of prescribed medications are concealed.
It was implied that this practice exists to ensure patients purchase medications directly from your facility. If so, this is ethically indefensible. I have practised medicine in several countries, and nowhere is it acceptable to withhold treatment details from patients. Discussing treatment options and explaining prescribed medications is a fundamental part of medical care.
This also raises a serious ethical question: would a patient be denied appropriate treatment simply because they could obtain prescribed medications more affordably elsewhere? Such an approach is incompatible with medical ethics, patient autonomy, and basic compassion.
Despite these concerns, we purchased the medications from your clinic after I spoke with one of the clinicians.
PA also underwent a sight test and subsequently requested his glasses prescription. This request was refused, apparently to compel him to purchase glasses from your facility. This is again unethical and constitutes a breach of data protection principles. Patients have the right to access their personal health information, including test results and prescriptions. This right exists under Nigerian data protection laws.
PA paid for his consultation and investigations. He is therefore entitled to:
-A clear explanation of his diagnosis
-Full disclosure of prescribed medications and their purpose
-Access to all his test results and glasses prescription
Healthcare in Nigeria is already challenging for many people. Medical facilities should not make life harder through coercive or opaque practices. Compassion, transparency, and respect for patients’ autonomy must be central to care delivery.
We would appreciate a written response addressing these concerns and clarifying your clinic’s policies on disclosure of diagnoses, prescriptions, and patient records.
Yours faithfully,
Dr Ayodeji Oladele
On behalf of P.A
