    • gift O. ★★★★★ John Harris Library (JHL) at the University of Benin (UNIBEN): its history and name, location and building layout, collections & services, digital/e-resources and projects, organization and contacts, use and research about the library, and practical info students/visitors commonly need. --- 1) Quick summary / identity The University of Benin central library is known as the John Harris Library (JHL), named in honour of Professor William John Harris — a pioneer figure in Nigerian university librarianship and the library’s first University Librarian. --- 2) Location & campus context JHL sits on UNIBEN’s Ugbowo Campus, along the main drive between the student complex (“Basement”) and the Students’ Halls of Residence, directly opposite the Clinical Students’ Hostel (NDDC Hall). This central location makes it the main academic resource hub for campus. --- 3) Building & physical layout The main John Harris Library building has three levels: Basement — bindery, reprography, audio-visual section, archival section, canteen and related service areas. Ground floor — check point/security, OPAC terminals, reference desk (“Ask-a-Librarian”), circulation, acquisitions, serials/journals unit, cataloguing & classification workroom, journal unit, waiting areas and administrative offices. First floor — reading spaces, stacks and other user areas (the website describes the three-level arrangement and the services allocated to the floors). --- 4) Collections & branch libraries JHL holds substantial print and non-print collections covering the full range of courses taught at UNIBEN: books, journals, theses, reports, audiovisual materials and archival holdings. UNIBEN’s library system includes faculty/branch libraries (Faculty of Arts, Law, Engineering, Pharmacy, Management Sciences, Life Sciences, College of Medical Sciences/UBTH sublibrary, etc.) that complement the central John Harris collections. --- 5) Services (what students & staff can use) OPAC / IR (online catalogue & institutional repository) — search the library holdings and institutional theses/papers. Reference & Ask-a-Librarian desk — in-person help and guidance. Circulation / borrowing, serials/journals access, cataloguing & acquisitions, bindery and reprographics. Audio-visual & archival services, and a readers’ conveniences (study spaces). The library also provides links to electronic subscriptions and LMS access (UNIBEN subscribes to resources such as ScienceDirect and other e-journals). --- 6) Digital resources & ICT / digitization efforts JHL offers an E-resources suite (closed access subscriptions and open access resources), an LMS gateway, and an institutional repository — and the university subscribes to large platforms (e.g., ScienceDirect/Scopus) that are available to campus users. Academic studies have evaluated digitization and e-library use at JHL: research shows digitization and ICT projects have had measurable positive impacts on library services and user access, although challenges (infrastructure, maintenance, awareness) remain common themes. These papers are useful if you want to learn about how JHL’s e-services are being used and improved. --- 7) Organization & leadership The library is headed by a University Librarian (the site lists the current leadership and senior librarians on the “Meet the Librarians” pages). JHL also operates several functional units (Acquisitions, Cataloguing & Classification, Serials, Reference, ICT, Archives, Bindery/Reprographics, Audio-Visual). --- 8) Opening hours & practical visiting info Typical opening hours listed on the library site are: Mon–Fri 08:00–19:00; Saturday 08:00–16:00; Sunday 12:00–18:00 (the site also lists vacation / exam variations — check the site for the current timetable). --- 9) Contact details (official) Mailing address: John Harris Library, University of Benin, PMB 1154, Ugbowo, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria (located along the main drive opposite the Clinical Students’ Hostel). The library site lists contact phone numbers and email addresses an
    • Onyinye O. ★★★★★ A perfect reading spot/library👌 the only issue is that the bag lockers have no key. So if you are going there make sure you leave no valuable in your bag. Also if your bag is luxury or close to it, you might not met it when you return to pick it up😁, so beware.

    • Daniel I. ★★★★★ Uniben Library Extension is a place where people or students come to study. There is free access and it does require a Library card for entry unlike the Library Also it opens at 7am and closes at 6pm everyday except Saturday and Saturday when it is closed. Also there is an upstair section also. Snacks, drinks and other eatables are sold at Library extension. The lighting and ventilation is good but the chairs downstairs are quite hard to the back but those upstairs are soft and better.
    • Mercy A. ★★★★★ Chain stores located within the University of Benin, where you can buy provisions and stationery items. It's like a mini business center.
