How to choose safely

What to check before choosing sushi restaurants in Abuja

Rankings are a starting point. For this category, these are the checks that most often separate a useful recommendation from a risky one.

  • Check recency

Restaurants change fast. Recent reviews and photos matter more than old popularity signals.

  • Match the occasion

Confirm ambience, parking, reservation rules, family-friendliness, and menu availability before going.

  • Watch consistency

Repeated comments about service speed, cleanliness, portions, and pricing are more useful than one viral review.

    • OLAMIDE A. ★★★★★ I visited Crossover recently and had such a pleasant experience from start to finish. From the parking area, the welcome was warm and organized. My friend kept teasing me that the food portions were so big I wouldn’t finish mine and would definitely be asking for a takeaway pack, she wasn’t wrong. We were seated upstairs, great ambience and a cooling system that actually worked (always a plus). Our drinks arrived first, the orange juice I ordered tasted freshly made not the watery kind and it was really refreshing. When the food came, I understood the warnings. I ordered poundo yam with seafood okro, and the portion was massive rich, well-seasoned, and loaded I genuinely enjoyed every bite. The background music was a nice touch early 2000s throwbacks that had us singing along at some point. It made the whole atmosphere feel relaxed and fun. Special mention to our waiter, MaryJane. She was polite, attentive, and handled everything smoothly without hovering. She made the experience even better. I’ll definitely be back and next time, I’m trying something other than swallow (though it’ll be hard to resist).
    • Jumoke ★★★★★ Crossover restaurant is a very nice place!! The customer service is excellent, (Edet) was very patient and kind with my family. One of best part is that you would need a take away because the portions are large, the price was really worth it. If you are looking for a nice spot to enjoy good food, this is the one!!

    • FSL ★★★★ Gusto is proof that sometimes you really do have to give places a second chance. My first visit was on a bustling Saturday night in the outdoor space, and I left pretty underwhelmed. The only thing I distinctly remember enjoying was the music. Fast forward a few years later, a Monday afternoon lunch date with a girlfriend, after our first and second choices were both closed, and Gusto ended up being the closest option. I’m so glad I didn’t immediately shut it down. The indoor ambiance felt upscale and spacious, much more refined than my first experience. That said, coming in from the hot outdoors, it could definitely have been a lot cooler inside. The service was attentive and pleasant, and the food was actually quite tasty this time around, though the portions were on the smaller side. Overall, a much better experience than my first visit and a reminder that timing (and seating choice) can really shape your impression of a place.

Except for the naan bread, the naan bread was absolutely divine. I would highly recommend anyone to try it if they go there.

    • Natalie K. ★★★★ We visited Four Guys in Abuja after receiving several recommendations and went specifically for their Chinese menu during our short five-day stay in the city. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing. We ordered Kung Pao Chicken and Mongolian Beef, but both dishes were completely inedible. The food was overwhelmingly and unpleasantly sweet, drenched in what tasted like nothing more than sugar, food colouring, and cornstarch. The Kung Pao Chicken did not resemble Kung Pao in any way, and the Mongolian Beef was deep-fried and then coated in the exact same overly sweet sauce. Neither dish reflected Chinese cuisine, and both plates had to be left untouched because they were simply impossible to eat. The flavors were so distinctly different from what we expected that we even remarked that the food tasted Filipino - and to our surprise, when we asked to speak with the manager, he informed us that the chef is indeed Filipino. This explained the flavour profile, but it also highlighted how misleading the menu descriptions are for anyone expecting authentic Chinese food (or even anything remotely close to it). Despite the poor food experience, the manager handled the situation exceptionally well. He listened carefully to our feedback, apologized sincerely, and offered us complimentary desserts. The tiramisu and chocolate brownie he provided were genuinely excellent and far better than the meal itself. In summary: • Chinese menu: Not authentic and inedible. • Food quality: Overly sweet, incorrectly prepared, and inaccurately labeled. • Service: Excellent; the manager was professional and accommodating. • Desserts: Outstanding. I would strongly advise against visiting Four Guys for Chinese cuisine, as the dishes are not representative of Chinese cooking and were unfortunately not edible. However, the service and desserts were commendable.
    • Amina Y. ★★★★ Atmosphere is lovely and we had an exceptional waitress called Benedicta. She was so helpful and eager to assist with everything. This is my best place for sushi. Been multiple times but didn't realise I never left a review. Service is always topnotch but I must say the food portion could be bigger especially for the prices. Other than that, I definitely recommend.

They only had rice and potatoes to serve me. Again. Over an hour wait for potatoes and rice. Their staff is so disorganized. Put a damper on our Valentines Date. My husband tried so hard to make it a wonderful night and Taj just ruined it. My heart breaks for the effort my husband put into it. Next year we will be in New York. Spending our time and money on top tier places.

    • Emmanuel D. ★★★★★ The great thing about The Place is that there is something decent for every price point - whether you just want an okay meal to fill your belly, or you want to dine like a king. Every meal is worth the price. The smokey jollof rice is my personal favourite, no food chain makes it better than the place. Interestingly, the base rate for a place of rice and chicken is cheaper than Chicken Republic.

    • Samuel O. ★★★★★ Ambience was great, you can choose to stay indoors (which we did) or outside (this seemed to have a better vibe in the evening once it’s cooler). Food was surprisingly good! I’m a bit biased to Japanese cuisines but the tacos (seafood) was really great, not oily or too creamy, they are also open to adjusting the recipe if you wish (my friend didn’t want the mayo). We also then had the Chicken salad with peanut sauce and that was the highlight for me! I kept trying to figure out what the sauce was made from so I can recreate it 😂 (it was that good). It’s at a higher price point than most places in Abuja (maybe 50K+ per person) but it was worth it! The only wrong choice I made was the Matcha Mocktail, but that’s on me, should have run away when I saw Matcha.
    • Collins C. ★★★★ I had a very disappointing experience at Marks At The Park today. Before sitting down, nobody informed us that there was a minimum spend of ₦80,000 per person. We ordered drinks, only for the waiter to come back and tell us that we were “supposed to order food” because our drinks didn’t reach the minimum spend. This is unprofessional and misleading. If there is a compulsory ₦80,000 minimum spend for each person at a table, customers should be clearly informed before they sit down or place an order. Springing such information on guests after orders have already been made is unacceptable. The whole situation felt like a trap, and the staff didn’t handle it well at all. I honestly cannot recommend this place based on today’s experience.

    • Anthony F. ★★★★★ Nice and courteous staff but housekeeping is very poor. I couldn't stay another night and had to check out to another hotel. Wouldn't have stayed there if I didn't arrive late and tired.
    • Emma ★★★★ I want to be very honest. We were genuinely looking forward to visiting this place as our first restaurant of 2026. The ambiance is wonderful, and I can easily believe it must have been a very good restaurant five years ago, based on the positive reviews we had read. The setting is attractive—with a cool rooftop, pleasant open‑air space, and private rooms that seem perfect for fine dining with friends and loved ones. Unfortunately, the dining experience was deeply disappointing. We waited more than one hour for our food, and when it finally arrived, it was terrible. The tom yam kung was just a thin, spicy tomato soup with generic frozen seafood. The so‑called Japanese cucumber salad had absolutely nothing Japanese about it—it should honestly be called Abuja cucumber salad. The satay, which should come with peanut sauce, was served with mayonnaise and ketchup. The “teriyaki beef” bore no relation to teriyaki in either flavor or preparation. The sushi was, regrettably, the worst of all—it tasted like a cheap paint. When my friend asked the waitress what the restaurant’s specialty was, the answer was: “Everything.” That alone explained the problem. A restaurant that does everything well is rare; a restaurant that specializes in nothing usually does nothing well. I would like to offer some constructive advice. Please focus on what you are genuinely good at. If you can prepare excellent Nigerian food—pepper soup, simple grilled dishes, or even just well‑made french fries—serve them with ice‑cold beer and drink. You already have a great atmosphere, and with skilled DJ you can hire, this place could easily be packed every weekend as a bar or lounge. However, expanding the menu to include exotic international cuisines comes with responsibility—the responsibility to do them properly. At this moment, that responsibility is not being met at all. Given the prices charged, we expected a well‑prepared, satisfying meal. What we experienced was interesting, but far from acceptable. We will not be returning, nor will we recommend this restaurant to our friends. One final piece of advice to future guests: do not order the sushi.

We were a table of seven, yet only one waiter was actually attentive while the others stood around chatting. Management should address this. Also, the gas and smoke level was way too intense. It got into my eyes the entire time. I couldn’t stop tearing up, and my eyes were burning. If you have sensitive eyes, do not wear makeup here. I left with a severe headache that lasted for hours. Nice for videos, but the comfort and service are not worth it.
